Thought Before World Series Game 1

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

It seems like ages ago when we were crossing our fingers the Yankees would sign CC Sabathia, AJ Burnet and Mark Texiera.   When we thought to ourselves “why Swisher?”   When we debated if Andy Pettitte still had a season left in his arm and if Robinson Cano would turn it around.   Winter hotstove was great last year… many games passed the time between then and now when the team we love is on the cusp of beginning a seven game fight for ring number twenty-seven.

Over the past months we witnessed a team maturing and coming together right in front of our eyes.  Setting records, coming from behind, getting pies in the face and all the rest of those great 2009 regular season memories.  Then the post season began and they demonstrated the confidence they had built up during the first 162 games.

Tonight we have the opportunity to watch one of the best Yankee teams ever assembled play a very good Phillies team.  The great baseball minds and talking heads agree that it’s a great matchup with each team having small advantages in different areas.  All that said it comes down to playing the game and being able to overcome adverse situations.  This Yankee team has gained plenty of experience doing this since April and they are poised to do it again in October/November.

This will be a great series to watch… two gritty tough teams with depth and character.   I feel fortunate to be able to witness this years World Series and feel confident the Yankees will battle their way to become world champions.   GO YANKEES!

Yankee Fans: Tonight’s THE Night We’ve Been Waiting For

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

When you think about six years it doesn’t really seem like a long time but it sure seems like it’s been awhile since the Yankees have owned the American League pennant.  Tonight they have a chance to capture the flag for the first time since 2003 when they beat Boston in 7 games.  For those of you who don’t remember 2003 maybe this will jog your memory:

Mariano Rivera was MVP, Aaron Boone hit an 11th inning home run off of Tim Wakefield in game 7 to win the series and Pedro Martinex “olayed” Don Zimmer during a bench clearing brawl.

We won’t talk about 2004 because that one is too painful.   But here and now the Yankees are looking better than ever and have a shot to put the Angels away tonight.   The good thing is they if it doesn’t work out tonight they have 2 more shots at home one of which would feature C.C.

We’re all hoping for A.J Burnett to be on his game tonight and for the Yankees to keep the bats swinging.   They can’t let their guard down though because the Angels are not going to go quietly and Lackey can be tough.

Sports radio already has the Yankees playing the Phillies but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.  I’m hoping that tonight in the bottom of the ninth the Yankees have a solid lead with Mo on the hill to shut it down.  Your probably like me… I miss having that tight feeling in my stomache as the strikes and outs mount up and the Yanks get closer to the win.  Let’s hope it’s tonight so they can rest up for a tough battle in the World Series.
