Andy Pettitte Signs With Yankees, The Rotation Is Complete

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Yankees GM Brian Cashman held a conference call with Pettitte on this afternoon to announce that they agreed to a one-year contract, allowing the veteran to help open the Yankees’ new stadium as a member of the rotation.

According to the Associated Press, Pettitte has accepted a base salary of $5.5 million, with innings-pitched and days-on-the-roster incentives that could raise the value of the contract to $12 million.

So now the rotation is complete…  CC, AJ, Wang, Joba & Andy with Phil in the wings when someone gets hurt of if Joba ends up in the bullpen.   WOW!

Andy Pettitte Talking with Joe Torre?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

If the Yankees want to sign Andy Pettitte they better get their act together.   The buzz (according to Ken Rosenthal) is that Pettitte is talking with his favorite Skipper, Joe Torre about transplanting to Los Angeles.  The Dodgers may be very interested in signing an American League left hander.

I may be in the minority but I think the Yankees would be making a mistake to let Pettitte go.  If they can get him for $13M – $14M for a year I would do it.  Especially now on the eve of C.C Sabathia expecting an offer from the LA Angels!  Left handers are scarce!  They may be sorry if they let Andy go.

Waiting on Pettitte and Mussina

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

No exciting news on the Yankee personnel front.  Hopefully we’ll hear about Mike Mussina’s decision as well as Yankee negotiations with Andy Pettitte.  Yankees are under a Thursday deadline with Pettitte.

The Yankee organization continues to move into the new stadium including personnel offices and Monument Park.   LoHud Yankees Blog reports that the stadium will be equipped with the latest in video technology to enhance the fan’s experience at the ball park.  Apparently .. “The Stadium has the capability to allow fans to communicate with players before and after the game using interactive video-based technology.”.   Should be pretty cool.   Hopefully I can afford the tickets without taking out a loan.

Andy Pettitte Files For Free Agency

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Today Andy Pettitte filed for free agency today  The Yankees have until Thursday to take advantage of their  negotiating rights with Pettitte.   Andy has said he wants a one year contract and wants to return to the Yankees.   As I wrote a few days ago, (Should The Yankees Sign Andy Pettitte? Yes!) sign him up already.

Other stuff:

Congrats to Willie Randolph,  the new bench coach for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Big ceremony yesterday at both stadiums.  Some local Bronx students and ex-Yankee players moved dirt from old stadium to new… from the pitchers mound and home plate area.   Nice.    Hope it brings good luck!

Should The Yankees Sign Andy Pettitte? Yes!

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Before I lay out the facts and stats… Let me start by saying I’m a big Andy Pettitte fan and consider him in the class of a “Yankee Great”.  I have great memories of his big game performances.  I love his pick off move.   I’m sold on his dedication to training and being in top shape.  I give him props for coming clean on HGH.   That all being said, lets take a look at how he might be able to help the team.

While Pettitte’s numbers dropped off after 2005, his stats since 2006 have been relatively consistant.    The Yankees signed him for $16M in 2007 after a mediocre season with Houston in 2006.  They picked up his option in 2008 for the same money after a similar season with the Yanks.

It seems now that with Pettitte (36) you know what your getting…  a 210 inning pitcher who will probably win around 14-16 games with around a 4.3 ERA.   While those aren’t stellar numbers, we know pitching talent in MLB is thin.   Both Andy Pettitte and Brian Cashman have expressed interest in each other.   I say make a deal!   Sign him to a 2 year deal for $12M per with MAYBE an option in year 3. People will come to see Pettitte pitch… they’ll come anyway.

Will history repeat itself? In 2006 Mike Mussina won 15 games, with a 3.51 ERA. After the 2006 season the Yankees signed Mussina to a 2 year, $23M deal.. he was 37 and had made $17M the year prior. Sound familiar?

Lastly, wouldn’t it be nice to have two quality left handers in your rotation… (assuming the sign C.C.)
